Default Division of Forest and Lands

Does anyone know if Forest and Lands - DRED are running encrypted now? I have heard next to nothing for radio traffic on north and south this summer which seems very odd. I know they have encryption abilities and wasn't sure if they went 100% encrypted.

They have been very quiet this summer. But to my knowledge they're not using encryption. However, given it's been Class 1 for fire danger almost all summer, that might explain some of it.

Parks on Hampton beach is using encryption w/their DMR stuff.

Does anyone know if the fire towers still use the low band frequency or are they all VHF digital now?

Good point it has been a pretty low fire danger summer.

I think the last 31.90 AM I saw was a relic in the Maine [Aggie] tower, while visting Dave

There are a few 31.90 radios around. Kind of a sacred item to any of the long standing tower guys. However, most of the tower work had moved to the primary repeater channels (151.445 or 151.295). There is a designated tower frequency (151.3775 I think). But has been rarely used as they had portables, not bases.

With the new Comms tech, the forestry radio landscape is changing and improving. Not sure what's up at the moment, but several new frequencies are being licensed, used and researched. One note is almost all of the northern system is simulcast and the southern system is in the works. that would mean no more "1A", "2B", etc. Just simply South & North. The tech also converted the 31.90 license from AM to FM for the most part and you may see it come back to life.

A while ago I noted several new DRED FCC applications.

I put the frequencies in my northern Coos NH to watch Favorites list. To be honest, I've been so busy in the field this summer and early fall that I have not paid a lot of attention to them.
Thanks for the reminder to listen a bit more carefully.
