It's a nice little mod. Like the 246, the 396 doesn't allow alternating frequency and alpha tag automatically. The 245 allows automatic toggling of frequency and TG ID, which is very similar, so I don't see why the 246 and other new generation scanners don't do it. Maybe in a future firmware update,...

Security was on 460.6625 last year. Not very active unless they are doing something like Homecoming, Graduation, Orientation, or Football. Still under 1,000 students total, so it's pretty small.

I want one TOO! And I fully expect to get one when they come out in March or April. It's going to be a great scanner. Although I must admit I'm not all that excited (yet) about the GPS thing.

Although it's way too early to speculate, I hope that ARC396 will be compatible with the new scanner.

You can't right now. We'll all have to wait until the official rebanding plan is finalized. At that time Uniden will make some sort of official announcement about when and how reflashing can be done.

If the Rangers at the State House are armed, it's a new development. I don't get up there all that often, but the last time I was there they weren't armed. There are troopers assigned to the State House, but inside only as far as I can tell. Southboro was the headquarters for the Criminal Justice Tr...

It looks like Troop I was disbanded in late 1994. Around this same time Framingham and Foxboro moved from A Troop to H Troop. Troops A and H were realigned into the current configuration.

1992 it was. Also, C was C as John relates. Troop B was L. F was indeed F.

I've found the RCMA files and I'm looking through them for information. I probably have something there on the MDC - State Police merger. As I recall Troop H was the former MDC stations in South and I was North.

I Troop was in existance for a very short time before it was consolidated into H. Before the merger Boston was within A troop's area, but as you point out it was very rare to see a SP cruiser in the city. H did dispatch out of the old MDC police headquarters, I think, Blossom Street, for several yea...

As they did for the DNC last year and for several other events after that, the Boston PD has patched their Ch 1 to BAPERN and one of the ITAC frequencies. I think ITAC 4, but I'm not sure.

Frankly, I think a specific law is pretty silly. The same universe of people that can't drive and talk, also can't drive and eat, drive and listen to the radio, or drive period. If it's so dangerous, why can police officers (or EMS personnel for that matter) drive and talk and use computers? The ans...

Long Island Scanning Resourc

In case no one has gone there today, it's gone. Jim Fordyce apparently had enough of some nitwit who was constantly harrassing him. At least for now, we've lost a pretty decent resource.

Most air ambulance systems that I'm familiar with lease the aircraft and hire the pilots though someone else. Keystone is one of the big providers. There is another big provider, but the name escapes me. Some of the bigger services own their own craft, as do a lot of government type providers. One a...

The frequencies that will be used for rebanding are from Nextel which is in the 800 SMR portion of the spectrum, not cellular frequencies. Cellular frequencies are and will continue to be used by Verizon and Cingular.

I haven't worked in New Bedford for several years now, but my recollection is that the 484 frequency was licensed to NBPD but was used by a regional anti drug task force. Which of course doesn't explain why someone was hearing it Tewksbury.

9600 apco digital radios will not allow you to affilate to the system without a system key and when you use the push to talk it will not allow any comm ops.
10 Talk Groups? I think it's a lot more than that, isn't it?

That wouldn't surprise me a bit. Between 70 and 80% of the city is underwater, they have no power, and phone lines are probably out as well. Back up batteries are only going to run so long and if they can't get to the generators to refuel them, they're going to stop running too. Police, Fire, EMS, a...

Scanners for Sale

As mentioned, I have two scanners for sale. First, a good as new Uniden 785D. The protective plastic is still on the display. Never used as a mobile. Comes with all accessories. The DC cord, cigarette lighter cord, bracket and knobs are still in their original wrapping. I have the cheesy back of set...

I'll be putting up a 296D and 785D for sale later tonight. I thought I'd give the crew here first shot before I put them on Ebay.

As our dispatchers say, "Details to follow". :)

For Sale?

Can we use the Scanning Equipment forum to post items for sale? If not, will there be a separate forum for that?
