NXDN for the x36HP scanners

#1 Post by garys » 26 Mar 2018 15:10

Uniden just announced that the beta version of the NXDN upgrade will be available tomorrow. A general firmware update which fixes, among other things, muting for Phase 2 encryption was released today. That also includes the NXDN upgrade, but the feature keys will not be released until tomorrow. $30.00 per key until the official version is released, but it will go up then.

The key is supposed to be available now. If I don't do the upgrade for my 436 and one of the 536s tonight, I'll do it in the morning.

Works well on the PVTA UMASS bus system from Pelham(Amherst). Not seeing the Aliases that are transmitted over the system, posted on RR asking if I am supposed to.
An interesting note is that ProScan is logging and recording the traffic from my 536 with the TGID, RID, & RAN listed in the tone column (I programmed it in the favorite list).

Will they be doing a NXDN upgrade for 325P2/996P2 anytime soon?

There hasn't been any mention of it, but it wouldn't be a surprise if they did.

Someone on RR mentioned that the DMR update for those radios came after the Beta versions on the 4/536 radios was tested and a final update released. Perhaps that would be the way that NXDN will work with the other scanners.

I updated my 436HP and bought the key for one of my 536s. I'll update the firmware and enter the key for the 536HP tomorrow. So far, Sentinel has not been updated to handle NXDN, so programming is by hand. Programming is not complicated, it's just time consuming.

I entered 5 of the sites for RDC communications and it tracks the ones that are in range. It's quiet tonight, as verified by my DSD+ set up that isn't seeing much traffic either.

When the software is available, I'll do more programming for this and the Radio Phone Communications. Those are the two main NXDN systems in the area. Unfortunately, the only conventional channels I've found so far belong to Brewster Ambulance and they are all encrypted.

Still, it's early in the game and more and more systems are moving from analog to digital all the time.

I have had luck using Sentinel to program a NXDN system in my 536 after a little bit of editing. Not worth it if you upload and download every week (see note at end)
First I created a new Favorite with system type being "MotoTRBO Trunk"
Next, I went through the steps to create the System, Site, Department, and Talkgroups.
I then uploaded it into the scanner
Before scanning, I go into the SD Card and open
BCDx36HP
Favorites_lists
Look for the newest .hpd file, open this file with Notepad
In the 3rd line, you will see "MotoTrbo". Change this to "Nxdn"
save and exit.
Scan
I have done this with a single site trunked NXDN48 system successfully.

NOTE:
If you download the system back into Sentinel, you will corrupt the data. It changes it into a P25Trunk system and removes TGIDs

The ease of this makes me think that the software will not be far behind.

Nice workaround Chris. Thanks for sharing it. I expect both Sentinel and ProScan will be updated soon.

I updated my 436 last night. The process was easy. I'm following one of the Network 178 sites here on Cape Cod and it appears to be working great. Audio quality is very good. I haven't run DSD+/FMP on this system in a while and I'm already seeing some new talkgroups.

I agree, nice workaround. And also that support in Sentinel and ARC536 won't be too far behind.

I've been listening to multiple Network 178 sites since last night and the scanner works well. I can receive Brockton, Fall River, Plymouth, and Boston. The only site that my SDR/DSD+ set up will receive that the scanner won't is Cumberland, RI. Neither will hear New Bedford or any of the Cape sites.

Audio is a clear on the scanner as it is on the computer, maybe a bit more. Audio is processed more quickly on the scanner than the computer.

It's definitely worth it to grab the upgrade at the pre Sentinel price of $30.00. I'll apply the upgrade to the 536HP in my truck in a bit.

Something else I've noticed about NXDN is that numerically TGID and UID are close. For example, 2100 is Coastal Medical Transport. 2101 is dispatch, but it acts more like a TG than Unit ID.

It's different than DMR, so it took me a while to decipher how this works. And of course, it works a bit differently on the Uniden scanners.

Just as an FYI the Uniden NXDN upgrade was still available for $30 (half of the regular $60 price) as of this past Friday, June 8th. This $30 discount could be especially useful if you have just recently purchased a new SDS100 and want/need the NXDN upgrade. I would do it ASAP if you are interested as this discount has been available since March and it may abruptly disappear at any time.
