Seekonk new system

#1 Post by Tim » 04 Feb 2018 12:14

Has anyone heard anything on what the new system will be? I checked the 470 UHF license and don’t see any change. I know they used 155.01 and it looks like the P25 is licensed to them. I know with East Providence on there border and using Riscon not sure how that is going to work out.

Just noticed at today's RISCON meeting. Seekonk system access request was on the table. I'll see if I can get the minutes of the meeting.

Is there much precedent for allowing out-of-state municipalities to operate on the RISCON system? I know that both Somerset (MA) and Fall River (MA) have radio capabilities in their fire boats to operate on RISCON Wide Area 5 when they are activated as part of the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force.

I think it's Swansea and Fall River FD that have the RISCON radio in there rescue boats. Not sure how this is going to work out with Seekonk PD and FD. Are they going to put a RISCON radio in every cruiser? Should be interesting.

I don't know about Swansea but I have heard both Somerset Fire Marine 1 and Fall River Fire Marine 1 fire boats operating on RISCON Wide Area 5 when the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force has been activated in the past. (If anyone is interested here's a link to some pictures of both the Somerset and Fall River fire boats: http://www.capecodfd.com/pages%20specia ... lRiver.htm)

Regarding Seekonk, I wonder what type of radio coverage they would get throughout Seekonk (especially with 800 MHz portables inside of buildings without vehicle repeaters) with the current RISCON tower/antenna configurations. One would think that the current RISCON system was not designed/engineered for optimal signal coverage throughout the entire town of Seekonk (from the northern Attleboro border to the southern East Providence/Swansea border to the western Rehoboth border).

I would assume that the Seekonk request is for RISCON use when they are providing Fire, EMS or Law Enforcement mutual aid to border cities in RI.

According to the minutes of the Seekonk Board of Selectmen meeting held on 10-04-2017, Nelson Communications has been awarded up to $30,000 for the completion of Phase II of the Seekonk Public Safety Radio Project and up to an additional $30,000 for the completion of Phase III. The minutes don't specify exactly what is involved in Phase II and Phase III or what the time parameters are for each phase.

Here is the link to the 10-04-2017 minutes (see pages 3-4): http://www.seekonk-ma.gov/pages/Seekonk ... 7final.pdf

For those who want to have a look at the initial recommendations (? if that was officially Phase I of the project) proposed by Nelson Communications to the Seekonk Board of Selectmen on 05-03-2017, I found a link online to the complete document. It makes for a very interesting read as it references current and proposed radio propagation maps, elimination of leased phone lines, T-Band issues to consider, end-of-life radio equipment, purchasing all-band/multi-band radios, etc.

Here's the link to the Nelson Communications document dated 05-03-2017: https://lintvwpri.files.wordpress.com/2 ... t-v3-1.pdf

Seekonk Fire has also applied for a similar system.

In the past, I have heard Seekonk PD using the fire radio channels as a backup. Perhaps this is why.
