Note - Date is scheduled for May 22nd
ROCHESTER — May 15 is scheduled to be a momentous day for the Rochester police, fire and EMT departments.
That is the date the town’s 911 emergency dispatch services will shift to being handled from the Regional Old Colony Communications Center (ROCC) headquartered in Duxbury as part of an inter-municipal agreement the town joined last year, town administrator Suzanne Szyndlar announced this week.
She said as part of the transition to the new system, ROCC dispatchers will ride with town police to get the lay of the land of their new geographic responsibility.
When they signed the agreement last January, the selectmen said joining the regional center that also serves Duxbury, Halifax and Plympton will qualify the town for state funds to upgrade communications equipment, especially the antenna tower.
This new equipment, in turn, will improve the quality of emergency services the town provides. Modern technology will allow Rochester’s emergency responders to be fast and effective regardless of the distance from the call center.
