Wynn / Encore casino, Everett

#1 Post by n1zyy » 07 Mar 2019 19:47

As my train passed the Encore in Everett, I got to wondering about their radios, as one does...

WRAR389 is the only license I can turn up for them:

857.8625
858.8625
859.8625

Licensed for analog voice and DMR, conventional. (Incidentally, it's wideband voice. I guess that's still allowed on 800 MHz?)

I only have a 440 HT with me today so I can't listen in to see if it's on the air, and my home QTH is probably too far away. Might be an interesting listen for someone in the area, though, to see if it's really live.

Low VHF and 800 MHz weren't required to narrowband, only VHF high and UHF. 900 MHz was narrow from the beginning.

Hello,

I was over at Costco Everett and searched 800 MHz with my SDS100. I got a really strong DMR Tier 3 control channel on 857.8625 Color Code 0. The SysID is 1. I am going to setup a radio tomorrow and see if there is any talkgroup activity.

Hello,

I am not seeing any talkgroup activity on the system. The opening is scheduled for June 23, so there should be some activity soon.

Now in talks to sell the hotel/casino to MGM. Which may or may not delay the opening.

I wonder if security operations will be encrypted? MGM doesn't seem to use it at the Springfield casino.

Hello,

Over the past week I have seen very light activity on talkgroup 18 by just a handful of units. The signal has been weak with my log-periodic beam, so I could not get any recordings with my scanner. I tried a 800 MHz beam and it seems better. I will let it run over tomorrow and see the results.

Hello,

I heard a news story this morning that reservations are coming in already to the various restaurants. I have not look at the Encore T3 system for a couple of weeks. I did a quick survey this morning and it is now active!

Talkgroups logged were 4, 10, 14, 20, 35, 60, 64.

I could not verify the Logical Frequency Numbers (LFN), but it appears the Channel 1 Base is 857.8625 with a 12.5 KHz step.

Code: Select all

LFN LSN Frequency
  1 3, 4 857.8625
 81 163,164 858.8625
161 323,324 859.8625

Hello,

I listened this morning to the system. I am on the edge of reception, so some radios do a better job than others.

Color Code for the three frequencies is 0. All the voice activity I have received so far is encrypted. I am occasionally in the Everett area so I will bring the scanner to monitor with a better signal.

I can't say I'm surprised that casino operations are encrypted. At least security and anything to do with gaming and finances.

The good news is I'm essentially a few miles line of sight from the Casino so I get an excellent signal. Running LCN finder on the 436 after no more than 10 minutes found me all 3 LCNs:
857.8625 - LCN 1
858.8625 - LCN 81
859. 8625 - LCN 161

The bad news is that I also ran a trunked discovery for 2 hours. It seemed to confirm that all talkgroups so far are encrypted. So far I've found TGs 4, 5, 8, 10, 13, 14, 20, 26, 27, 34, 35, 36, 40, 46, 48, 57, 60, 64, 911, 1677214 (What I believe is all-call,) and a few I-calls.

It's disappointing from a hobbyist's point of view, but not surprising that it's completely encrypted. The only thing that gave me a glimmer of hope is that trunked systems for the Wynn casinos in Las Vegas don't list encrypted talkgroups in RR, but those are also different protocols (I believe one was Capacity Plus, the other was analog).

Hello,

The Everett system is Tier 3 and I suspect is Motorola Capacity Max. I get the same mapping on my SDS100.

It is interesting comparing the 800 MHz sensitivity of the SDRPlay vs SDS100 vs BCD536HP (ranked from best to worse).

I would think Casino radio comms would get quite boring after a while, though. Listening to Plainridge Park's trunk gets quite dull. Majority of comms are about breaks, concessions, etc. Not much in the way of good stuff. MGM in Springfield also seems that way too.

I received an email from a friend today who heard testing on UTAC 1 (453.4625) this morning. The testing was police related and it appears that they will be using that for the opening. I'd expect officers from more than one agency will be on hand for traffic and crowd control during the opening.

I think they open this weekend, so that traffic should increase Saturday and Sunday.

Hearing Encore traffic details on MSP SOPS-8, not sure if it's a patch to UTAC-1 as I can't hear that from my present location. Testing with MSP troopers and various local police officers stationed at numerous traffic posts in Everett, Somerville, Medford and Revere.

The news this morning said that the operators are expecting 50,000 people today. Also, there will be shuttle buses from as far away as Plaistow, NH. Water taxis from the Boston waterfront as well.

Should be a busy day on the radio.
