DCR Fire Towers

#1 Post by AFD94 » 30 Mar 2016 10:23

It's that time again. DCR fire seasonal help have started and with some dry conditions finally, the towers and fire crews are active. A reminder to monitor the following frequencies for those that area interested.

151.235 71.9 DCR Fire 13 - Fire Towers & Crews from Districts 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 & 14
151.310 71.9 DCR Fire 14 - Fire Towers & Crews from Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 & 11
MSP TG 11088 DCR Fire 2 - Fire Towers & Crews usually in Districts 1 & 2 but others maybe heard especially if operating in the Middlesex Fells or Metro Boston area
MSP TG 10736 DCR Field Ops - Mostly DCR Rangers but occasionally Fire units use for contact with control and/or rangers

Is 151.205 pl 71.9 still used or is that just for the state parks signing on and off and calling DCR control?

Yes, thats the statewide admin channel for units signing on, off and other pertinent info. 151.145 71.9 serves a similar purpose but is repeaterized across the state.

Even with all the rain we had the Fire Towers were on the air today. Heard Plymouth, Middleboro on 151.31 71.9 and
Bourne and Sandwich Towers on DCR-Fire 2 TG 11088 on Zone 4.

Seems to be more activity on the 800 system than I recall in prior years. Don't remember hearing off cape towers like Plymouth, Middleboro and Fall River on the 800.
Also hearing district wardens from all over the state on the 800 3-0, 6-0, 7-0, 8-0 etc. again don't recall as much of their use of the 800 in prior years.

You are right with more activity on the 800 system, I heard 2-0 and the Sharon Fire Tower also on the 800 today.

As other districts get or have gotten 800 radios they tend to use it more. But now its much more reliable for direct comms to units in the field than the previous days of having to contact control or a tower and have them relay on the VHF system. Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 14 are 800MHz equipped. I don't believe any districts further west have any.

It appears that 11088 DCR Fire 2 is not repeating statewide. When 7-0 and 8-0 transmit I'm only hearing their messages via Zone 8 nothing on Zone 5.

Could be (assumption) that there was No One affiliated to Zone 5 at that time.

Some TG's are 24/7, some are upon a valid radio affiliating and others can be disabled during Large Scale events to prevent issues.
With the Boston Marathon upon us, I would venture we will see many many variables to lots of channels/systems that would not regularly occur.

I got some more info today on this subject. All Wardens and some towers have 800MHz capabilities now. Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 14 are on Fire 2. Districts 9, 10, 11 & 12 are on Fire 1. Fire scene ops will switch to Fire 13 or 14 on the VHF respectively.

As of 15:50hrs as well I've heard Fire C1 off in Monson as well as 7-0, 7-1 talking in the Oxford area on Fire 1. This is through the Mt Nebo (Westboro) Troop C site.

Yes more or less. Some areas of Central may be on Fire 1 or 2 depending on the coverage. Fire 1 is also for the West. Central, East, Southeast and Cape/Islands are on Fire 2.

I would think 11056 would not normally be heard on the Eastern Zones, unless someone affiliates to it from an Eastern Site.
Altho, since it is also a Central/Western TG, it could also be blocked at the controller to prevent any voice-channel overloads
