Does Anyone Ever Use VHF FM Simplex Any More?

#1 Post by NIGHTHAWK01 » 13 May 2018 10:57

So does anyone ever use VHF simplex any more or is everyone just using low powered portables via the repeater.

In the Springfield MA area, a simplex emergency net is held every Wednesday around 2000 hrs local on 146.42 (not .52), so amateurs can check out how well they could operate if all the local repeaters were down.

I generally monitor 146.52 mhz on my scanner at home and while mobile, BUT frankly haven't heard any chatter for a long time.

What do others find?

I live in New Hampshire and the use of simplex is used often in the lakes region.
We use 6m.52.5250, 2m.146.5200. 146.4200, 220 call. 223.5000 and 70cm 446.0000. 446.0300

When the bands were open last week I heard quite a few folks on 146.520. I worked a station on .52 in Standish, ME from Rollinsford, NH with a HT running 5w and a full-wave loop antenna in my backyard.

99% of my operations are simplex - mobile to mobile - with the family. Also use an HT while out on the property back to the house.
