Strange Scanner Behavior

#1 Post by deacon » 09 Jun 2018 07:43

For the last few weeks several frequencies, that are always calm, have interference I have not heard before. The strange factor is all the frequencies with the issue end in 325. 154.325, 165.325, 151.325, 155.325. The noise sounds like a machine buzz.

Does the noise occur, away from the House?
Try shutting down the power in the house and if that resolves it, then work thru each Circuit Breaker
If not maybe also try disconnecting the car power, see if some of the electronics are still being powered

Keep in-mind it might not even be thought of as new electronics, even the Cheap USB chargers are sprewing crap.
USFS and Fire Services are encountering issues especially with in-vehciel chargers

I had an issue with 120.500 AM Worcester Airport tower and 160.650 FM Providence and Worcester Railroad Road channel.

Since there is no PL option on either of these frequencies, I had to find the source.

I took me along time to figure it out, but since the scanners were next to the 220 AC outlet for the air conditioner unit. I had to turn of the surge protector on the Air Conditioner unit when I wasn't using it.

I also have noise on 155.700 Shrewsbury Police. I use the PL, but there is a constant squelch tail, I think its the Refrigerator causing the noise.

The other thing you can try is to take a handheld radio with no antenna, and set your scanner to the frequencies in question and walk around the area of your house and see what gives off noise.

Low band also is an issue but thankfully it is not used as a primary channel in Grafton area except for Grafton DPW and Northbridge Fire (soon to be VHF High).

You can also put the Low Band FM Military Frequencies with a pl of 151.4, since that form my understanding is the standard pl for Military FM analog.

Well, it did not take me long to find the source of the noise. It is the Uniden power supplies, actually found three that are making noise. I tried using an extension cord to a outlet further away, no joy. Do the power supplies making noise need to be replaced?? Any suggestion would be appreciated. I am using a tone, but the noise limits reception clarity.

Thank you,
Chuck

I would replace it. My guess is that a filter capacitor failed. You don't have to buy a Uniden branded cube as long as the amperage, plug size, and plug polarity are all the same. It's odd however, that all three are doing this at the same time if it's a capacitor failure.

How did you figure out that they were the culprits?

Well, I stand corrected. I entered 154.325 into one of my ICOMS and the noise appeared. Back to working on this issue. The noise must be coming
by way of the antenna.
