Unication G5 Dual Band 450-520 & 700-800MHz Voice Pager-Receiver

#1 Post by Tim » 08 Feb 2017 18:24

Anyone thinking of trying one? Like to see how it receives the RISCOM system.

Ideal for 700/800 MHz. and UHF P25 digital trunking systems, the Unication G5 receiver allows professional results in a compact package. It will also work for conventional channels within the UHF, 700 and 800 MHz. bands commonly used for interoperability and tactical uses. This is an ideal way to monitor digital systems with similar performance of expensive two-way radios without the programming and legal issues at a much lower price. If you need coverage below 450 MHz. then look to the UHF-Lo model G5. Free programming software makes it easy to program both trunked and conventional systems. The selling price is $945.00.

Ray's Pager Sales is selling the Unication G5 for $660.25 and that price includes a 2-year warranty. A 5-year extended warranty is $105. For the month of February they are also offering FREE shipping on the Unication pagers if you use the code FREESHIP at checkout.

You may be able to do even better than the $660.25 price per the following online information posted by Jeff of The Ham Station:

Sorry as of Nov 2nd we are no longer a Unication dealer.

I do recommend this dealer for your Unication needs

Tell Ray that Jeff sent you and ask Ray for the best price on G4 and G5 pager, he will be at the lowest he is allowed to go.Again you must ask for it.

After doing some further research on the Unication G5, it seems that there is quite the price range for the actual "street" selling price. The $945 price that the OP Tim mentioned in his post #1 is the current selling price from Scanner Master. The $660.25 selling price from Ray's Pager Sales posted above is actually 30% off of the Scanner Master price. The bottom line is to shop around beforehand if you decide to purchase one of these G5 pagers as $285 is quite the price difference.

There's a recent thread (01-26-2017) at Radio Reference which gives the Unication G5 some good reviews especially for monitoring simulcast systems: http://forums.radioreference.com/unicat ... chase.html

You can also download a Unication G5 product brochure with technical specs here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/80zwxyfsa0m2p ... 6.pdf?dl=0

Here's some videos on the Unication G5 that show it in action. From the reception heard/seen on the videos it appears to do quite well on simulcast systems.

I've been interested in this unit for the northern NH, ME border state police, fish and game, etc.
NH is conventional P25 but is a real challenge to monitor due to weak signals and multipath.
ME MSCOMMNET is much easier to monitor (even in NH).

The removable antenna is only for 700/800.
There are conflicting reports regarding whether the antenna connector on the charging station is also only for 700/800 or for VHF/UHF.

I've held off on purchase due to questions about the charging station antenna and the fact the unit won't do analog trunked so no good in most of Mass where I spend half my time. At $660 plus the cost of the charging base it would be a lot of $$$ if not perfect.

I know it's an old thread, but I just picked up a G5 on ebay. I never thought I had a problem with the RISCON system with my various Uniden, Whistler and GRE/RS scanners, but WOW!

Crystal clear audio without any distortion whatsoever. The programming software is a bit bulky, but a few hours of trial and error and you'll be a pro.

I am able to pick up all 3 RISCON zones in my basement office in Attleboro without any issues and have programmed many UHF frequencies as well. You do have to keep in mind that it is made as a tool to be integrated into a radio system and not a scanner. Because of this there are limitations. You must set up an individual scan list for each zone (North, South, Providence) as setting up a scan list with the control channels for all 3 will result in the radio locking onto the strongest CC signal and staying tethered to that CC until it is out of range, where it will then find the next strongest, which results in being locked into that zone and not hearing talkgroups that are normally not affiliated with it. You cannot hold on a TG, but you can set up other knob positions in the radio zone with scanlists with single TGs that you know may be of interest to switch to and monitor. The UHF channels can be entered into knob positions and then added to a conventional scanlist, which does have a hold button. I think I may be getting a little convoluted in my description, but the radio is versatile enough to use a a scanner for almost any application. It is limited to 64 Talkgroups or 16 conventional channels per scanlist, but there is plenty of room for multiple scanlists to customize to your needs.

When I go back to work on Monday, I'll try it on the Boston 700 Overlay.

I will, I've been field testing the hell out of it and put a lot of miles on the car since my last post. Worcester...crystal clear, All 3 RISCON zones...crystal clear, Boston 700 Overlay...crystal clear. It locked onto the RISCON South Zone on I95N in Mystic, CT and didn't lose it. It locked onto the Worcester System in Uxbridge on Route 146. Locked onto the Boston 700 Overlay from I90E in Natick.

The UHF antenna is internal and I thought that would be a problem, but it was receiving Attleboro PD/FD full quieting from I95S in Walpole. I was focusing on the trunked systems, so I haven't really felt it out on UHF yet.

video to follow.....

Well, I think I finally got enough to give a good representation. 11 minutes, lots of dead air (they seem to know when I was recording.)

RISCON-Providence Fire from Branch Ave & I95 in Providence

Worcester-Worcester PD from Shoppes at Blackstone Valley in Millbury

All of the rest are from my office at Mass Av and Albany St. In Boston

Boston 700 Overlay-Boston FD
Cambridge-Cambridge Fire (note the little shield next to the radio ID of the encrypted radio)
Boston EMS UHF

Something worth noting. I just plugged the G5 into my discone and am receiving the Worcester System loud and clear. Even with an 800 mhz. yagi 10 feet higher and pointed at Worcester I was never able to receive them. This is definitely a hot little receiver.

What was the previous receiver? But their system is definitely better to the south and east than to the north. Pure coincidence that someone who had something to do with the system lived in that direction away from the city.

It was a PSR-600 listening on the EDACS system. I tried my WS-1080 on the discone the other day and got nothing. Next time up up on the tower I'll point the Yagi back and see if the new system is better.

I've been tempted to get one of these, though Mass SP Zone 5 is still SmartZone and is most of what I listen to on 800 MHz.

But in any case, there seems to be a $100 off promotion through December 21st: https://www.unicationusa.com/promotions
