BCD996XT vs. BCD996p2

#1 Post by MetroScanMA » 01 Nov 2019 14:40

recently my 996XT keypad stopped working and I am curious as to peoples opinion. Should I look for a used 996XT as they have been discontinued and new ones are not available anywhere or get a new 996p2 I loved the XT for the years I had it so any opinions would be appreciated?

The 996P2 will offer you everything the 996XT did but also can receive DMR transmissions with the software upgrade. My $.02? Get a 996P2.

Look at how long you have had your current scanner and think that far into the future. I would expect the MA Statewide P25 system to eventually have a lot of Phase 2. DMR and NXDN get more popular all the time. It only takes your favorite system to go to one of the newer technologies and you will be thinking you should have bought the better one. However, I would still say to look for a 996XT if you think you are content with the the capabilities of it. You can spend the higher amount of money later if you need the more capability.

My big concern is the receiver in the 996p2 as good as the 996XT receiver I was disappointed with comparison of the 996XT and the 536HP receivers. The XT series had the best receivers in my opinion.

Just send it to Uniden for repair. The repair cost is very low, like $60-$80 range. They will go through it and fix everything, usually comes back nicer than what you sent out. Much better option than a questionable used model, or a whole new one for what is likely a simple fix by them.

Current repair price is $89.95, including shipping for the 996XT. I paid that to repair a loss of reception issue with my 536HP. Along with the latest firmware upgrade, I was so pleased with the results that I decided to keep that scanner and retire my WS1065 instead.
