7/17 DX Report

Post by Scott »

Band opening to the south tonight. I was tuning around with my new Funcube Dongle (no jokes Mark) and tried 162.400 to see how it was working. I heard a NOAA Weather station and figured it was Providence until references to Delaware Bay were made. Turns out it was out of Atlantic City, NJ, and apparently totally covering Providence.

Also, Ocean County EMS on 155.205.

On a side note I'll write something up about the Funcube Dongle before too long. In the meantime the website can be found at http://www.funcubedongle.com . I've had this one for about a month now, a true SDR in a USB sized dongle covering approx 64 - 1700 MHz. Pretty nifty device.

The MUF (Maximum Usable Frequency) has been sky high since mid afternoon. I have been busy working stations from Montenegro an Novia Scotia just to name a couple on 10 meters. I was accessing 3 repeaters on 29.64 but not able to get any responses, even though I was hearing myself fine on the output with my scanner. But back to more fun even though the MUF is dropping. It was up around 120 earlier.

Scott,

I saw the post at radioreference about the funcube dongle, but I actually showed restraint from commenting. Trust me, I had a few classics at the ready!

Getting some hams on 29.52 in FM mode, it sounds like its part of a linked net in the south somewhere

That's the input to 29.62, you'll hear them probably better there. In fact you might hear me there.

It must be pretty far to the east. I have no signs of any opening here in RI. Just a little FM enhancement from the usual suspect in NYC (WFUV).

Checking the map, it's stretching way down south.
