Considerable DX Opening

Post by Scott »

Since last night there has been a considerable band opening to the north from my location on the Cape. VHF and UHF from Maine very prevalent. Boston PD has very strong full quieting signals. Only got to do a little monitoring but it's still going strong as I type this if anyone is interested.

FM Radio as well, caught some new stations during my Dunkins run

Notice the APRS was wide open from NC to NS today, sadly been tied up at work with multiple issues, and only able to listen in the background

This seems to be coming up again, or it just hasn't gone away. Noticed some considerable signals while working today also but didn't have time to investigate.

460.5500 151.4 York County ME Fire
Lots of BPD, not as strong as this morning but enough for better than normal copy.

The rain coming through the area north of me seems to have killed the opening to the north. Before it did I found:

160.8600 162.2 MSCommNet Bangor RCC
154.7250 162.2 MSCommNet Coggans Hill

And I was monitoring the aforementioned 160.950 CC for MSCOMMNET with FMPA, which is part of DSD+. A beautiful piece of software, just add a control channel and it goes from there.

As for now, the opening seems to have swung to the southwest for me. The usual 154.845 from Long Island is acting like it's local. Off to search some more.

155.5200 114.8 Mendon MA Police
154.8150 141.3 Believe this to be Southampton NY Police as per RR database. Listed as "data". They were giving back license plate info. Accent to me sounds NY'ish.
152.4200 DMR CC1 TIII Site: L7-33 - This one has me mystified, but doing a little digging in the RR forums leads me to believe it may be Nova Scotia Power. This of course contradicts that the band opening has shifted due to the weather...maybe it shifted back? Strong here now. CC only, no transmissions heard yet. Neighbors are L7-37, 40, 32, 34, 36, 39, 35.

Hello,

I would say 152.4200 is Nova Scotia Power based on this message. https://forums.radioreference.com/threa ... st-3629480

That's the thread I found. Interestingly after I posted that I looked at the weather, and a duct would have been sitting directly in front and parallel to the weather front coming through. The signal was exceptionally strong at that point, then faded fast, came back once briefly, and then was totally gone.

Fun stuff as always!
