Mike maybe you can explain more about what this failure caused. I know they are climbing again today did this mean folks had to switch back to their old assignments to go back to Cedar St so they could take apart Cabot Street??
It's quite convoluted, and I've been away for a week, so I am not sure what the status is, as of tonight.

However, one of the two main transmission lines at Cabot had an internal failure that caused a two line sections to overheat and fail.
Approx 300 feet up. Residual damage (smoke) was found as high as 600 feet. Because the two lines drive 1/2 wave elements on the antenna, the antenna is only giving
half of the gain, and no circularity in power.

To reduce the amount of RF in the system overall, WFXT moved to their Cedar Backup. WCVB did too, but may have switched back. I know the signal from Cedar St was giving us major problems.

For what it's worth, I still don't get WBZ here up in Billerica. Before the shift, it came in crystal clear. I've got a Yagi up in the attic.

I saw a notice on the Channel 7 website that there is another rescan on October 19. Is that just to find them, or is there another realignment.

WSBK switches from their current 39 to 21 on, or about that day. They're fully built, just need a proof done on their transmitter at Cabot St.

WHDH will most likely switch then too. Almost all of their gear is in, and they are planning a helicopter antenna swap on their Newton tower at some point, but will be able to operate their post repack on a lower side mount.

In Providence,
WSBE-TV (36) is off, and won't be back on, on their new channel (2) , while WJAR and WLNE are switching prior to the January deadline as well.

Thanks, that explains it. I have two TVs with antennas attached, just in case cable goes out in a power outage. I like to keep them current.

Chicago is Phase 6, which happens to be the current phase we're in. The Phase 6 deadline is October 18th.
Phase 7, begins October 19th and ends January 17th, 2020. WSBK, WHDH-TV in Boston are both Phase 7, and can transition anytime between those dates.
(WJAR, WLNE and WSBE in Providence, RI, are also Phase 7 stations).

They are installing equipment for the new side mount broadband antenna that will become the interim main, while the post repack antennas on the tower are installed.

Edit. To confirm that is exactly what they did. They are now running on their interim main at 982 feet.

Boston channels 7, 38, and 56 disappeared Saturday morning. Knowing that repack is going on, I rescanned about noon
on Saturday and channel 38 reappeared. Channels 7 and 56 have still not reappeared- are they having technical problems?

I also saw a chyron on Providence channel 10 WJAR last night, saying that a rescan after 2pm on Oct 22 would be necessary.

Can anyone shed light on the above? I can find nothing about rescans in the media or on the station's websites.

Hi Dennis,
There are tower workers in town working on their tower. They are probably moving antennas and feed lines around. They should be back you may have to rescan again since you did when they were down. I'm not home to check but I'd guess that work would have been done on the weekend.

I did a rescan Saturday afternoon and received all three of those channels with no issue. Since I'm using inside antennas as a back up system, I don't expect to get every channel, but the number of stations I can get surprised me. The TV upstairs is better than the one downstairs, but I still get most of the Boston area stations. Certainly, I get enough reception to watch TV news in the event that there is a power/cable outage.

I did have some flash backs to when I was a yute and was both the TV remote and antenna rotor in the house! ;)

So 7 and 56 are combined using a single transmitter (56 is a channel share on 7). They are running a fairly directional signal about 100 feet down on their main tower.
They are going to be doing a helicopter to remove the old stacked antennas on top and put the new stacked pole/antenna for their channel. They will be at their full power signal after that work is completed.

WJAR and WLNE are in the middle of having their antenna swapped out. They are currently on a side mounted aux antenna combined while the top antenna work is completed. The top antenna was replaced yesterday, and a lot of other work has to get completed, such as connecting up feedline, etc., to get the new transmitter on the air.
Once they are up, then the work to replace WSBE's currently missing antenna will begin as well.

So, another rescan may increase the number of channels received? I know that this is a ten phase process, but I couldn't see a schedule for when each phase occurs. It also looks like different regions are part of the phases, but I couldn't place dates with regions or phases.

https://www.fcc.gov/about-fcc/fcc-initi ... n-schedule

The official schedule.

Everyone in this area is done by Phase 7. I believe Burlington-Plattsburgh has some Phase 8 or 10 stations.
Albany has a couple of 10's as well. Southern New England is all 7, at the latest however.

38 is still on their post repack channel 21 transmitter. I was standing in front of it about 3pm today, and it's still up at 11kW.

Not sure if 7 went off or not for the tower work.

That's probably WCEA-LD, the LP station on the Hancock tower. They are going to 36 before 2021.
