Television Repack Thread

#1 Post by W1KNE » 25 Apr 2019 08:42

So for those of you who are unfamiliar, or vaguely familiar, we are about to enter a second time where a lot of changes are going to happen to the broadcast television landscape.
As the results of a congressional order, a reverse (or "incentive") auction was performed a few years ago, and 94 MHz of RF spectrum was sold off from UHF broadcasting to be used for wireless communications.
The FCC allowed stations to elect a few choices as to what they wanted to do with their channel. UHF TV stations were allowed to.
1) No changes, stay UHF.
2) Surrender their channel, and enter into a "channel sharing" agreement where the license mirrors the facility of another station, and their signal is merged onto the primary transport of the main station
3) Go to VHF Band 3 (Channels 7-13).
4) Go to VHF Band 1 (Channels 2-6).
Stations that elected to use option 2 were paid the most amount of money for the surrender of their UHF spectrum. 4 next, followed by 3 and then 1.
After the election process was complete, the FCC then decided to go through the channel spectrum in the country and using an algorithm, they shifted channels around. Any channel above 36, the cut-off, is required to go into an open slot below 36. Because the channel shifting involved "pairs", triples, and in some cases even more, channels were swapped out with other channels. The timing to shift channels was also done in such a way so that groups would be switching with coordination. Here in the Boston area, you may have noticed a very big tower project at the American Owned former Candelabra tower, where a new set of antennas were installed. The new antennas will serve as primaries for 2 stations, and backups for 4 more. You will notice over the summer, a bunch of more work being done on the American Tower in Needham, that is just west of 128, known to some old timers as "The WBZ tower".

In Boston, of the 14 stations, 11 were affected by the repack. Three (WYDN 48, WLVI 56, WMFP 62) entered into channel sharing agreements with other stations. One went to VHF Band 1 (WGBH 2), and the rest remained.
WUNI 66.1 (RF Ch 27) was the only UHF not affected, and WWDP 46.1 (RF Ch 10) was the only VHF not affected.

Everyone else is moving.
A full list of who is moving where is located here.
http://www.necrat.us/biz/wiki/index.php/Repack

In Boston, everyone minus two stations, are moving on the Phase 4 deadline of August 2, 2019. Two stations (WHDH 7, WSBK 38) both will transiiton on January 17, 2020.

Because we have a lot of TV DXers and RF guys here, I decided to start this thread. Any discussions or questions about the upcoming changes can be asked here.

Interesting up here, is that WPXT will be moving to the WMTW tower in Baldwin (not surprising, since Hearst now owns WPXT, even moving the WMTW studios from in town Portland to the WPXT facility in Westbrook). But, what I see is more surprising is WIPL (the ION station), also has applied to move it's transmitter and antenna to the WMTW tower. Could be since they are still in the same building, saving on a seperate STL to the old site in Gray? Or, maybe better coverage into Portland?

W40BO-D moves to ch26 after Repack not Ch28. As far as I know Ch28 remains empty at least in Boston.

Whoops! It looks like the ones that have already gone to their shared Ch. (“prepack”? P=) are still listed with their vacated Ch. as “Current”—at least with the Boston area Ch.s:

    CALLs:VirCh “Current”Actual (Host Station)

Code: Select all

   WYCN-CD:15 36 43 (WGBX)
      WFXZ:24 24 19 (WGBH)
   WWJE-DT:50 35 27 (WUNI)
      WLVI:56 41 42 (WHDH)
      WDPX:58 40 32 (WBPX)

So the final testing has begun as of Tuesday. Stations are testing their "post transition" channels during the overnight hours. WGBX-TV tested theirs earlier in the week on channel 32, WCVB on channel 33 this morning. WBZ-TV and WFXT are expected to in the next couple of days. Unsure when WGBH-TV tests their new channel 5 transmitter.

WBPX, the iON station is now running on their new channel 22, from a tower way out in Hudson.

WGBH, WBZ, WCVB, WGBX, and WFXT will all switch over at 1am on Friday morning, August 2nd.

All of the stations seem to have notices telling over the air viewers to rescan their TVs on August 2. I have a back up generator and put antennas on two of them just in case. While my TVs should work, I'm not 100% sure about my cable or Internet.

I was pleasantly surprised when I put the antennas on and did an initial scan at how many stations there are on the air. A lot of them are "secondary" channels with retro TV shows, but that's okay. I'll at least be able to get the local news.
We're peace loving people, we're not hunting trouble, but if trouble should find us, we'll stand up and fight.

Is the repack at 1 or 3am?
I think WBZ:4 says 1am but WCVB:5 says 3am—but since WCVB is going from RF-20 to 33 and WBZ from 30 to 20, WCVB has to go first...or is the first couple of hours expected to be planned chaos?

WGBX went at 1am, WCVB at 1:05, WFXT also at 1:05. WBZ-TV went sometime after that.. We were all in the same room.
WNEU and WUTF both went at 1am. WBZ-TV is having issues with their signal being fed to the transmitter.

Hello,

I looked on my spectrum analyzer in the early afternoon and scanned the channels with my older Vizio TV. I am using a fixed TV yagi off pointed from Needham to get some RI stations.

RF Pilot Station
05 -72 WGBH
07 -83 WPRI
12 -80 WNAC
19 -52 WUTF
20 -40 WBZ
22 -65 WBPX

29 -38 WUTF (Pre-pack)
32 -42 WGBX
33 -42 WCVB

39 -50 WSBK (Pre-pack)
42 -42 WHDH (Pre-pack)
45 -70 WCEA-LD (Pre-pack)
46 -65 WBTS-LD (Pre-pack)

It looks like having two RF frequencies on the air confused the TV and there may also be some mis-configuration as some channels show up on their RF channel number.

Hello,

Thanks, I missed that on the list. I do not know why I am missing a couple of channels on the Vizio.

There is a neat program called TSReader that can read MPEG streams. I used the Lite version to read the various bits of stream information using an old AutumnWave OnAir GT. Unfortunately this USB 2.0 device is no longer made and I did not have success installing the drivers on my newer Win7 laptop. There is a long thread on AVSForum on getting it to work in Windows 7 so I am going to read the thread.

Went out to my RV today and re-scanned the channels with it sitting in my yard down here on the Southcoast. This is on a Jensen 55" Digital TV connected to the King DTV antenna on the roof and the built in antenna booster on. I am receiving 60 channels.

Hello,

I got TSReader Lite working in Windows 7! I had to use the last non-beta release driver.

It is interesting looking at the streams and see what channels share the RF channel. One obvious problem is the engineers at the repacked stations did not change their ATSC channel number.

It looks like my old Vizio TV can not handle subchannels that are on different frequencies. So WGBH-HD is listed by the RF Channel and program (5-3) instead of 2-1. I wonder if it also messes up other channels in the virtual channel table and that is why I do not get all the channels.

Code: Select all

Hello,

I found out the reason my old Vizio HDTV was missing a few channels and renaming others. I had "Additional Scan" set to on, which just adds to the existing channel table. When I turned it off, I regained WFXT and WGBH showed up on channel 2. I had to do something similar for locals on my DISH network receiver. I deleted all the local channels, then did a channel scan.

So when channels move around with the repack, it is better to start from scratch.

Using a flat panel indoor antenna, i'm able to get about 34 channels on the downstairs TV and more on the upstairs TV.

Just like in the old days, I had to move the antennas for a couple of channels to be viewable.

Since this is my back up system if cable goes down, it's more than sufficient for my needs. If I were cord cutting, I'd put a better antenna up.

A component in one of the two transmission lines failed around 470 feet. WCVB-TV switched to the backup transmitter on Cedar St. The other stations are running "single thread" on the other transmission line at reduced power, while tower crews assemble to fix the issue.

WBTS‐CD Transitioning From WGBX To WNEU?

#23 Post by Kaimbridge » 12 Aug 2019 17:30

First noted this morning, WBTS‐CD (ex-WYCN‐CD) now has four 15.x subchannels:

15.1—(RF-32)—“WBTS‐CD”
15.2—(RF-32)—“Cozi”
15.3—(RF-29)—“NBC”
15.4—(RF-29)—“COZI”

The RF-29’s appear to be simulcasts of their respective RF-32 signals (15.4 uses the same, lower left corner, TOHID as 15.2).
Are they actually bringing the 15s over to their WNEU co‐owned RF-29, or are they just testing/using an alternate backup setup (particularly given the weekend outage)?
I know WGBX is carrying a lot of passengers on RF-32, and there is the speculation that WGBH’s RF-5 may be used for ATSC 3.0, when the time comes, so they may want to move the ATSC 1.0 RF-5 signals to RF-32 (though WGBX is probably getting a healthy chunk of change for carrying WBTS).

"About" what is the range? (I fully understand ymmv).

I'm at about 110' 65 miles west in Gardner.

Debating also getting an antenna for the place in Maine (campground is bootlegging a few channels off DirecTV and the quality is awful, even for the local channels).
