Pops goes Boston 2022

Post by ecps92 »

With the weekend rapidly approaching, the various patches
between Boston, Cambridge and MSP/DCR should begin being tested.

Best to review the many prior year comments/notes as not much does change from year to year
and many of the patches/channels used are the same or similar to
a. Boston Marathon
b. Head of the Charles
c. Boston Calling etc

Also keep in mind, for those in/around Charlestown the USS Constitution [NPS and NAVY channels] also does a turn-around this weekend.
and finally we have a Canadian Warship over at Black Falcon (err Ray Flynn Cruiseport) along with our normal Cruise ships
and a Merchant Marine Training Ship (One in Dry Dock and one at the Piers)

Happy and Safe Fourth

Thanks. The first couple of years my son was at Mass Maritime they used the Maine ship because theirs was in for a refit.

The kids referred to it as the "State of Pain" because it was in such bad shape.

Just heard my first DC Rentals/All Comm transmission related to the show. I was starting to think they weren't using the system this year up till then. Talkgroup 242 is the first one I have heard so far.

MSP is using SOPS-1. Yesterday it was affiliating to the 700 Overlay but not today I guess no troopers with digital radios tuned in. I haven't really noticed any of the usual patched yet. Overall very quiet so far. This years rehearsal tonight is not open to the public so things will be very different till tomorrow.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 700 system comes alive with traffic at some point. Troopers from all over the state get called in for the 4th of July. Several years back I met a trooper from Lee who was called in for the day. He told me it's an "All hands on deck" event for the MSP. Pretty much the same for Boston EMS, but that's a different story.

Lots of good memories from working that detail over the years.

Pretty much always had been an "All Hands" back to the MDC Days, with Vacations and time-off being revoked if the Detail/Volunteer list could not be filled.

Add Events 2 to the active list. Does not sound like a police agency but it is folks down at the Hatch area.

Was down at Esplinard this afternoon. ALL MSP now have 6000's but operating on various SOPS which is still analog. Talking to some MSP they are using SOPS 1 for today. Other SOPS using for escorts. Sops 8 reserved for EDU teams. 3+5 active.

No patches to BPD open yet. BPD is only traffic at this point.

National Guard has APX's. Both 6000 and 8000 look the same, except 6000 (MSP 800) has 800 antennas. The NG has all band antennas so could be 8000, or even left over 7000 that the MSP replaced with 8000 for special units.

MSP Brass -- Major, Lt. Colonel and Col. Mason had 8000's. Their 8000's had a longer battery and one I have never seen before. So I asked and was told they are a new size and shape for the 8000's for a 15hr shift.

Many Ford Focus's with Federal Gov. Plates. They had 8500's with hand mics and motorola triband antennas (looked very strange on trunk). And 8000 portables with all band antennas.

The 6 guys (2 teams of 3) wearing sport coats over their dress shirts in 89 degree sun on the Esplinard were FBI/Homeland Security. Earpieces and was standing near one when he pulled up his pants with 8000, and 40 cal. on his belt, next to his FBI badge. No idea their transmit to receive.

Someone arrived thru only vehicle reserved entrance (?? maybe Wu) in a Tahoo, blacked out, with BPD antennas flashed the blues. Driver rolled down the window and showed credentials, but asked to wait as dogs walked around the vehicle. That was odd.

If I go tomorrow will update, but seems more guys this year even for rehersal. All streets blocked by snowplows starting at 11am.

Happy 4rth - stay safe

Update
MSP SOPS 2 seems to with the Cambridge CP
Odd as that had in the past been MSP LPS-1 and Cambridge PS-Patch

Boston PD Boat for the Constitution was up on SOPS 2, but that is on LPS and Boston doesn't have that channel

Is the MSP on SOPS channels running on analog or digital?
Are they using anything on COMIRS?
What is going to be the BPD, MSP, and others main patch line-up?

Very curious, today is the day to learn and listen.

Thanks for any info

Yes and No for Analog/Digital

both are CoMIRS
if you are listening to Sys 0d14 = Analog
if you are listening to Sys D14 = Digital

One other thing I forgot to mention is that the National Guard units had Harris radios.
