MGM Springfield CAP Trunk

#1 Post by W1KNE » 29 Jul 2018 00:21

So Springfield's new MGM Casino has a capacity trunk system that has flamed up.

I haven't had the chance to sit and do all the work, most of it came from travelling
However, I have confirmed two of the three licensed trunk frequencies, the CCs and an active TG with Casino identifiable communications.

I have created the starter page in the WIKI for it.
https://scan-ne.net/wiki/index.php?titl ... ield_Trunk

The recreation page is tied to it, as well.

very very faint on my UHF yagi facing toward that area. Using DSDPlus, I get LCN 1 for 451.8375, no traffic for other channels so far. I have seen TGID 102 only as well but that is Sunday traffic only. I also see this as Site 1 but that shouldn't be important except for DSDPlus users who want to set up scanning.

The hotel is slated to open in late August, but I didn't see anything saying when the entire complex will be open. I expect that the system will get busier as the opening gets closer. People in the area might get some good listening and be able to figure out what's going on with the system.

I am planning on being back up there in a week, but I do spend a LOT of time in the area, plus with Chris and Unit7 Fred, we should all get a good grab as to what this system is doing. The public opening isn't until then, but the hotel is fully built and internal operations are already happening.

Public opening day for the facility is 8/24. I would imagine they will have everything running and everyone working a week before. From the broken conversations I can hear at home, the 102 TG is a catch all for now and I have heard mostly Security on it. Once a dispatch center is staffed, I would expect that all the various users will split off onto their own TGs.

I would expect that you are right. Casinos are pretty complex operations. Security will have at least one talk group and I wouldn't be even a little bit surprised if it's encrypted. Then housekeeping, maintenance, catering, casino operations, at the least. Plus event staff for the Mass Mutual venue. Valet as well, probably.

It's probably going to be an interesting system to listen to.

I did get the channel layout using scanner and DSDPlus to confirm it.
451.8375 LCN 1
452.0125 LCN 2
452.3500 LCN 3
I will update the WIKI.

From what I have been told, there will be a series of "soft openings" before the Aug 24 Grand Opening. Like family and friends of the employees, special VIP previews, etc. This will help the staff to work out any operational issues prior to the Grand Opening. I would expect you would hear more activity on the system during those events.

MGM grand opening is today. Expect a lot of radio traffic in the Springfield area tied to it. Several streets in downtown Springfield will be closed. Too bad the PD is encrypted.

I was away so much my monitoring was unattended. From a radio point of view it seemed pretty chaotic. If they will be like that often, I would suspect they will be looking for another radio channel. I don't know what a Capacity Plus system does when it is at capacity but there was many times where all 6 slots were full. It was very difficult to control following a conversation because it would jump to another slot or frequency. DSDPlus and my 536 had the same problem of missed replies (no different than any other busy trunked system).

It appears that slot attendants and techs do not all have radios. The carry gaming industry devices that alert them to jobs, jackpots, repairs, etc. I have seen these same things at Mohegan Sun and it seems that they are common in many casinos.

Couple uncommon terms I have heard quite often:
Mobile Responder - Android based smartphone style employee notification system
EBR - Employee Break Room
GSR - unsure, refers to slot workers. Gaming System Representative perhaps?
482 - Break - may be a short personal break
483 - Break - may be a longer break, meal

Everything is a work in progress.

I also heard references to the EDR (Employee Dining Room).
I listened to it a bit on opening night myself and it was insane.

GSR is a Gaming Supplier Representative. Basically the vendor of gaming equipment. Probably on hand to assist issue with the slots.
