New Eversource radio system

Post by CG »

While looking for new radio info, I found a number of applications from Eversource to various regulatory groups about changing antennas. All refer to 217 or 220 MHz antennas. Many include the following:

“Eversource is in the process of reconfiguring its communications system throughout the
State. The proposed installation is part of Eversource’s program to update the current obsolete
analog voice radio communications system to a modern digital voice communications system.
The new system will enable the highest level of voice communications under all operating
conditions, including during critical emergency and storm restoration activities. The new radio
system will also provide for remote control of distribution safety equipment.”

The Western MA system is still analog (MPT1327) but I would think that system would follow suit.

I'm hearing a control channel on 217.220 mhz (it may actually be 217.225 though)

DSD+FL identifies it as: [DMR] TIII (TAIT) Site:L1-1.5 DCC:0

Also while scouring the internet (and finding this post, thanks cg!) I found this:

https://www.selectspectrum.com/assets/d ... 200504.pdf

Which could be part of why I did not locate an FCC license at all.

Anyone else hearing CCs around 220?

Use .00625 steps (6.25 in DSDPlus)

I am getting a bunch of sites, logging them now. I am near Bradley Airport so could be MA or CT

Nice work Chris. Now to scope out the sites!

I assume one will be up in Bloomfield on that ridge near Tarriffville. (Off of Hoskins Road)

Hoskins Rd Site it is called I believe and is one of the sites. I am trying to put together a list but as it is private, there aren't many sources of information. The licensing is not site based If I recall.

Ah that explains it.

The only one I seem to hear down here in southeast CT is the 1.5 I mentioned.

I even double checked with a SDR# waterfall.

Will continue monitoring.

Looks like they are licensed slightly differently...

Example here:

https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSea ... ey=2785431

Could help with a list of possible site names/locations.

To recreate my ULS search, use:

https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSea ... vanced.jsp
State = Connecticut
Frequency Range: 217 - 218

Anyone have any more info on this system? Is it in operation? If it is what freqs are they using in Litchfield county?

And the biggest question for me... What radios are they using???? Im yet to see ONE 200mhz DMR radio.

Calm down grasshopper. We are working on IDing it. If you have a DMR scanner and can search, you can help.
Tell us what you find here.

I have an SDR but a freq would be helpful as scanning on the SDR is super slow.

So on a scanner, program in the custom search for those 200 MHz frequencies, default the custom search name.
You can figure out what's close as you drive near it.

- I would imagine that you read that the system is still being built. This means there is only sporadic testing going on. I have seen days go by with only a half dozen transmissions and those may be done in one or two minutes. I have see patches from what I suspect is low band only twice.
- The system in MA uses both 217 & 220 MHz but so far in CT, I have only seen 217 MHz channels in use. I have logged 23 sites so far but have only one location confirmed.
- So far, you may be out of luck with a scanner. I suspect that Uniden scanners MAY be unable currently to trunktrack this system
- The system uses Tait equipment. I did read that the current Tait radios can be DMR and MPT1327 so they then would be able to be on the Western MA 217/220 MPT1327 as well.

I suspect 6.4 is West Hartland and the other could be either Soapstone Hill in Torrington or Canton substation (Rt 44 & 179).
If it operates like other trunking systems, a site would likely need a radio affiliated to a specific talkgroup in order for that group to be broadcast at the site. So if there is not a user affiliated, there would be nothing heard.
Frequency reuse is common across the state so using the DCCs is important if it turns out that Uniden scanners can trunktrack the Tait Tier III.

Thanks Chris. It's the same hill as the FMs. Torrington's PD conventional repeater is up there.
