Wal*Mart transitioning away from conventional radios

Post by W1KNE »

According to this article, Wal*Mart will be transitioning to giving their employees mobile devices with a built in PTT feature. As mentioned in this thread at Radio Reference, some stores have also switched over to a 900 ISM radio system. The days of monitoring them on 154.5700 and 154.6000 are coming to an end.

Timing of this couldn't have been better. I was in Macy's Hyannis over the weekend. Each employee had their own over one ear headset connected to a small
2 in x 2 in square down by the waist. Did not see a traditional radio ? Also unless I'm losing my touch, spent a good few minutes in front of the Hyannis Old Navy. Even though each employee had a small portable..never caught anything on their common freq.

They are however giving the old radios to their customers, who in turn will use them to coordinate brawls over items in short supply, in various parts of the store. A 5 minute warning will be broadcast to all units with the hopes of maximizing spectator attendance.

We're peace loving people, we're not hunting trouble, but if trouble should find us, we'll stand up and fight.

Had a chance to take a walk thru Macy's Cape Cod Mall. Lo and behold found unattended one of these little boxes that everyone has in their ears.
Well, I had to do the right thing and take a little looksy. Way of the future...must be why nothing heard from the Ops side for some time.
Not even sure if they have "security" like the old days.
