Massive Fire - I-95 in Groton

Post by W1KNE »

On the Gold Star bridge which crosses the Thames River. Tanker roll-over with large fire. Urgent request for engineers due to possible structural damage. Ignited diesel spillage over the side as well.
Large area closed off, I-95 is closed in both directions. Damage to south-bound span. Units from as far as Rhode Island responding.

Went over it this morning going South. Left 2 lanes open, right 2 lanes closed with about 300 feet of black, melted railing and fence that needs to be replaced.

I generally take 84 through CT into upstate NY when I drive to the south. Back in 2005 when CT was doing that big rebuild of the I-91/I-95 interchange in New Haven I learned that I-95 backed up all the time. The Merritt is a good alternative if you are going to NYC or through NJ. Both of which I avoid unless I have no choice. When my son lived in NJ we'd take the Tappanzee and then go down the GSP.

We're peace loving people, we're not hunting trouble, but if trouble should find us, we'll stand up and fight.
